Open science at EPHE-PSL

The École Pratique des Hautes Études - PSL supports open science and the sharing of knowledge.

Open research in France is the "unhindered" dissemination of scientific production. While France has adopted a National Plan for Open Science (PNSO) which makes "open access mandatory for publications and for data resulting from project-funded research" and which is based on the technological transformations linked to digital technology, discover the EPHE-PSL's open access collections: scientific journals, open archives, digital library.

Open research is an international movement that has been growing steadily since the 1990s through several calls and manifestos launched by academic communities in favor of the "unhindered dissemination of academic research results, methods and products" in various forms (publications, grey literature, data, software source codes, etc.).

It is now a national policy punctuated by several texts (law for a digital republic in 2016, 1st national plan for open science in 2018, 2nd plan in 2021) and gradually implemented by institutions. One of the objectives is to meet the risk of public research being monopolized by private and closed databases, but also to achieve greater efficiency by allowing the reuse of research data according to FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) principles.

Taking into account legal constraints, it is nevertheless intended to be "as open as possible, as closed as necessary" as can be read on the national website Ouvrir la Science.

Faithful to its research ambition and the sharing of knowledge, the EPHE has been committed for several years to the path of openness that it continues to develop. The EPHE is a co-signatory of the Open Science Charter published in May 2020 by PSL University. The charter is based on two main ideas:

Axis 1: "Supporting open access to research publications"

Axis 2: "Promoting the proper management of research data"

At EPHE-PSL, open research is now illustrated in various projects and achievements of research publishing and open online publication: HAL-EPHE, EPHE-PSL journals Open Access but also collections digitized and distributed, according to current standards, in the digital library of PSL University, on Gallica and Persée.

Since 2019, EPHE - PSL has also been supporting the Peer Community In (PCI). Founded in December 2016 by 3 INRAE scientists, PCI is a non-profit organization of researchers offering peer review (thematic ICPs), recommendations and publication of scientific articles in open access (in an open archive or in one of the community's journals).

Support for researchers and doctoral students

Support for open research (research data, researcher identifiers, deposits in HAL, etc.) is based on the training offered by the doctoral college of PSL University and by the Humathèque, the large documentary facility on the Condorcet campus.

Concerning the funded projects (ANR, ERC, Marie Curie), a small cross-disciplinary team has been set up between the Open Science Mission and the EPHE-PSL Project  Set-up and Monitoring Department to help the units best meet the requests of funders.

If you have any questions, need support, follow a training course or for an open research project with the EPHE-PSL, write to EPHE-PSL open science.
