Laboratories of Excellence

Research at the service of the Investments for the Future Programme

Committed to the Investments for the Future Program (PIA), the EPHE - PSL is an institution with two LabEXs: the LabEx Corail and the LabEx Hastec. These Laboratories of Excellence participate in the integrated policy of research, training and high-level development.

The Laboratories of Excellence (LabEx) have a threefold objective:

  • have international visibility;
  • attract internationally renowned researchers and teacher-researchers;
  • to build an integrated policy of research, training and development of a high level.

LabEx Coral

While they cover only 0.02% of the ocean's surface, coral reefs bring together nearly 25% of the seas' biodiversity. This essential ecosystem is disappearing (20% of reefs have permanently disappeared and 25% are in great danger). Improving their sustainable management is urgent and relies on the integration of knowledge into their governance.
The LabEx " Coral reefs facing global change" (Corail) brings this expertise to France, the French overseas territories and to the island countries of the Pacific, Indian Ocean and the Caribbean, by associating all the French overseas territories involved in coral reef research. It is managed by a board of directors and is supported by the École Pratique des Hautes Études (8 partner institutions: CNRS, EHESS, Ifremer, IRD, UAG, UNC, UPF, UR). It is integrated into PSL University.

The aim is to establish a French centre of excellence for the study of coral reefs at the highest scientific level in the world in terms of impact factors thanks to a common signature of publications.
