SVT

Section of Life and Earth Sciences

Bringing together more than 80 scholars and 30 research support staff in 26 research units throughout France (60% of the staff in the provinces and overseas, 40% in Île-de-France), the Life and Earth Sciences Section (SVT) covers a rich field of research and teaching ranging from environmental sciences, evolution and ecology to biological sciences (molecular and cellular), neuroscience and cognitive sciences.

The Section is divided in six thematic research and teaching groups (GRETs) which offer valuable expertise for the major societal issues of the twenty-first century, addressing, for example, questions about human-nature relations and biodiversity conservation, the ageing of the population, physiopathologies and rare diseases, collective and individual memory, natural and artificial cognition. The SVT Section also has access to an internationally renowned marine station in Moorea (CRIOBE).

The SVT Section is strongly involved in two EPHE's institutes that create strong links between fundamental research and society, in particular through professional training:

The faculty of the SVT Section actively participate in PSL's Life Sciences and Earth Sciences and Biodiversity graduate programs through the courses offered by the PSL master's degrees (SDV and Stepe masters) and the specific training of these graduate programs. They are also strongly involved in the teaching of the Bachelor's degree in Science for a Sustainable World at PSL. The expertise of our faculty also benefits the professional world thanks to the various professional training courses offered by the Section, including the EPHE-PSL Diploma with a mention in SVT , which allows research to be learned through research under the supervision of a faculty from the Section.
